Our Story

Esperance (Abridged) is the story of a young Annapolis graduate, Nick McCullough, who achieves the rank of Captain aboard the U.S.S. Boise, a ship later involved in the Battle of Cape Esperance off the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific in 1942. The story follows his life and family during and after the War, including a special assignment for the President of the United States, and his lawyer-brother who makes a bid for the U.S. Presidency. It concludes in a twist of fate that trades a President for a President.

Rescue Mission

Nick and his team sat in their sea raft that they had rowed out to pre-arranged coordinates, while he tapped out his name repeatedly in Morse Code just below the water line. They were well beyond the rendezvous time. Suddenly, Nick sensed a disturbance to his right. As he looked over his shoulder, the water began swirling. He looked at the rescued mathematics professor and the rest of the team and said, “Let’s hope it’s got the right flag on her,” and, as they watched, the water begin to boil white with bubbles, then part. Slowly, the bow came up, and then the conning surfaced. Find out if the sub carried the stars and stripes, or a red flag with a golden hammer, sickle and red star on top, a symbol of the Soviet Union.
